How to Write a Great Birthday Card: A Step-by-Step Guide
To write a birthday card, open with their name and a warm hello, add one specific thing (a memory, an inside joke, something you admire), and close with a wish for the year ahead. Three to five sentences is enough. Below are 43 examples for friends, family, kids, coworkers, a partner and milestone birthdays.
Why a good birthday card matters more than you think
In the age of "HBD" texts and emoji-only DMs, a thoughtful birthday card is shockingly rare, and that's exactly what makes it powerful.
Plenty of people keep birthday cards for years. Compare that to a text message that gets buried in minutes.
The bar is low. A genuine, specific, well-written birthday card can genuinely make someone's day. Here's how to write one.
The 3-part birthday card formula
Every great birthday card follows a simple structure:
1. Open with warmth. Start with a personal greeting. "Happy birthday, Sarah!" works, but "Happy birthday to my favorite adventure buddy!" is better.
2. Add something specific. This is what separates a great card from a generic one. Mention a memory, an inside joke, a quality you admire, or something you're looking forward to doing together. The more specific, the more meaningful.
3. Close with a wish. End with a forward-looking wish: for the year ahead, for their happiness, or for something specific to their goals.
That's it. Three sentences minimum, five max. Quality over quantity.
Birthday card examples for a friend
- "Happy birthday to someone who makes every room brighter. This year, I hope the universe gives back even a fraction of the joy you give everyone around you."
- "Another year of questionable decisions and incredible memories. Wouldn't have it any other way. Happy birthday!"
- "HBD to the person who still owes me from that bet in 2023. Consider this card your annual reminder. Love you."
- "I know birthdays get weird as we get older, but you somehow keep getting cooler. Cheers to another year of proving age wrong."
- "Happy birthday, friend. Thank you for being the person I can call at 2am and not feel bad about it. You're irreplaceable."
- "Thanks for always picking up, laughing in the right places and never once judging my terrible decisions out loud. Happy birthday."

Birthday card examples for family
For a parent:
- "Happy birthday, Mom. Every year I find more of you in me, and I'm glad about all of it. Thank you for everything: the big stuff and the small stuff."
- "Dad, happy birthday. You taught me that showing up is 90% of everything. This card is me showing up. Love you."
- "You made every one of my birthdays feel like a big deal, even the years money was tight. Today it's your turn. Happy birthday, Mom."
- "I got my work ethic from you, my sense of humor from you, and, if I'm honest, most of my opinions about [barbecue]. Happy birthday, Dad."
For a sibling:
- "Happy birthday to the one person who remembers every embarrassing thing I did as a kid and still talks to me. You're stuck with me forever."
- "Growing up with you was chaos. I wouldn't trade a single moment. Happy birthday."
For a grandparent:
- "Happy birthday, Grandma. Every family gathering is better because you're there. Thank you for being our anchor."
- "Grandpa, you've lived more stories than most people will ever read. Happy birthday to the best storyteller I know."
Birthday card examples for kids
Short sentences, their name, and one thing they're into right now. Read it aloud if they're little:
- "Happy 6th birthday, [name]. You are brave, funny and very good at [building towers]. I can't wait to see what you build this year."
- "Happy birthday, [name]. Keep being the curious, kind kid who asks a hundred questions at dinner. We love every one of them."
- "Thirteen. A real teenager. I'm proud of the person you're turning into, and I'm still allowed to embarrass you. Happy birthday."
Birthday card examples for a coworker or boss
The trick with professional birthday cards: warm but not weird. Skip the inside jokes unless you're actually close.
- "Happy birthday. You make this team better, and not just because you bring the good coffee. Cheers to a great year."
- "Wishing you a birthday that's at least as enjoyable as a Friday afternoon. You've earned it."
- "Happy birthday! This year has been a lot more fun with you on the team. Hope you celebrate big."
- "To a manager who actually listens: happy birthday. We appreciate you more than we say."
- "Wishing you a day of cake, no meetings and zero emails. Happy birthday."
Keep it to 2-3 lines for coworkers. Save the novel-length messages for close friends and family.
Birthday card examples for a partner
- "Happy birthday to the person I choose every single day. You make ordinary life feel extraordinary. I love you."
- "Another year together, and I'm still not tired of your terrible puns. That's real love. Happy birthday."
- "You deserve the world today, but I'll start with breakfast in bed and go from there. Happy birthday, love."
- "Every birthday I spend with you reminds me how lucky I am. Here's to many more. I love you endlessly."
- "Happy birthday to my favorite person. No exaggeration, no filter. Just you."
Birthday card examples for a neighbor or someone you know less well
A neighbor, a partner's relative, a friend's parent: warm, short, and nothing you'd have to explain.
- "Happy birthday, [name]. It's always nice to see you at [the school gate], and I hope you have a lovely day."
- "Wishing you a very happy birthday, [name]. Thank you for always making us feel so welcome at your table."
- "Happy birthday from all of us at number [12]. We hope the year ahead is a good one."
Milestone birthday card examples
For a 30th, 40th, 50th or beyond, name the number and say something about the years rather than the age. For more, see milestone birthday messages.
- "Happy 40th. You've spent the last ten years building a life you actually like, and it shows. Here's to the next ten."
- "Fifty years of you, and the world is better for every one of them. Happy birthday, [name]."
- "Happy 80th, [name]. Eighty years, and you still out-walk all of us on [the Sunday hike]. We're so glad to celebrate you."
Funny birthday card examples
Only for people who'll laugh, and aimed at the two of you rather than their age:
- "I got you a gift. It's on its way. It'll be there. It is definitely not forgotten. Happy birthday."
- "They say wisdom comes with age, so by my math you must be a genius by now. Happy birthday."
- "I was going to write something deep in here, but we both know I peaked with the card I made you in [2009]. Happy birthday."
Belated birthday card examples
If the day has gone by, say so plainly and don't over-apologize:
- "This card is late, and you deserved better. Happy belated birthday. I hope the day was as good as you are."
- "Happy belated birthday. I thought about you on the day and still managed not to send this. Lunch is on me to make up for it."
- "Late, I know. Happy birthday anyway, and tell me everything you did."
What to write in a group birthday card
One personal line next to your name beats a signature on its own:
- "Happy birthday. I couldn't have survived [the launch] without you. Here's to a quieter year."
- "Happy birthday. Thanks for always saving me a seat at the Monday meeting."
- "Happy birthday from the desk across from yours. The plants and I wish you a great year."
What NOT to write in a birthday card
A few things to avoid:
- Don't make it about age anxiety. "Wow, you're getting old!" feels less funny the older people get. If they joke about their age first, fine. Otherwise skip it.
- Don't be generic. "Hope you have a great day!" is the birthday card equivalent of a participation trophy. Add one specific detail and it immediately becomes 10x better.
- Don't turn it into a roast unless you know they'd love it. Read the room.
- Don't write a group card message that's clearly copied. If you sign a group card, add one personal line, even just "Loved working on the Q3 project with you."
- Don't forget to sign your name. Sounds obvious, but it happens more than you'd think, especially with group cards.
5 pro tips for better birthday cards
1. Write it by hand. Even if your handwriting is terrible, a handwritten card beats a typed one every time. The imperfection IS the charm.
2. Be specific. "You're a great friend" < "Remember when we got lost in Portland and ended up at that amazing taco place? That's the kind of adventure I'm grateful for."
3. Match their vibe. Some people love sentimental. Some people want to laugh. Write for them, not for you.
4. Don't overthink it. Three genuine sentences beat three paragraphs of filler. If you mean it, it'll land.
5. Set a reminder so you're not writing it last minute. Greetigo emails you before the birthday, so you have time to write something great instead of panic-scribbling in the car.
When you really can't find the words
It happens. You stare at the blank card, you know what you feel, but the words won't come.
Two options:
- 1.Use Greetigo's free greeting generator. Tell it the recipient, occasion, and tone, and get a starter message. Use it as-is or as a starting point to add your own touch. (AI-written drafts are on Plus and Premium.) Try it at greetigo.com/greeting-generator.
- 1.Start from one of our messages. We have 63 birthday wishes organized by relationship, plus messages for every other occasion.
