What to Write in a Housewarming Card: 50 Messages & Tips

In a housewarming card, congratulate them on the new place, wish them happy years there, and add one line that only you could write: an offer to help unpack, a memory from their old place, or the first dinner you hope to have there. Two or three sentences is plenty. Below are 50 housewarming messages for friends, family, coworkers, a first home and new neighbors, plus what to leave out.

Why housewarming cards matter

Moving is exhausting. Between packing, cleaning, and dealing with movers, the last thing new homeowners expect is a thoughtful card. That is exactly why it means so much.

A housewarming card does not need to be long or poetic. It just needs to acknowledge the milestone and wish them well in their new space. Here is how to nail it.

For close friends

  • "Your new place is going to be filled with so much love and laughter. Congrats on your beautiful home."
  • "Can't wait to make a million memories at your place. Congratulations!"
  • "Home is where the heart is, and yours has always been huge. Enjoy every corner of this new chapter."
  • "From apartment life to homeowner. You did it, and I'm so proud of you."
  • "I call dibs on the guest room. Congratulations on your gorgeous new home."
  • "New address, same amazing you. Welcome home."
  • "Here's to the housewarming party, takeout eaten on the floor, and making this place completely yours."

For family

  • "Watching you build your own home, in every sense of the word, makes us so proud. Congratulations."
  • "May your new home be filled with warmth, love, and the smell of something delicious cooking."
  • "Every family deserves a place to call their own. So happy you found yours."
  • "Home sweet home! We could not be happier for you and your family."
  • "The walls are new, but the love inside is timeless. Congratulations."
  • "[Grandma] would have loved this kitchen. Congratulations on your new home. We can't wait for the first family dinner around that table."

For coworkers

  • "Congratulations on your new home. All the best as you settle in."
  • "New home, new routine. Hope the move went smoothly and the boxes are nearly gone."
  • "So happy for you. Enjoy making the new space yours."
  • "A new home is a new chapter. Congratulations and best wishes."
  • "Welcome to homeownership! May your mortgage be low and your ceilings be high."

For a first home

For first-time buyers, and anyone moving into the first place that feels like theirs:

  • "Your first home. All those years of saving and touring places that smelled like soup, and here you are. Congratulations."
  • "First home, first keys that are really yours. I hope you stand in the empty living room for a minute and just enjoy it."
  • "Congratulations on the first place that's entirely yours. Paint the walls whatever color you like."
  • "You did the spreadsheets, the viewings and the paperwork, and now you get the best part: coming home. Congratulations."

For a couple moving in together

  • "Two sets of everything, one home. Congratulations on moving in together, and good luck deciding whose couch stays."
  • "So happy to see you two under one roof. May the closet space be fairly divided."
  • "Here's to your first home together: slow Sunday mornings, one shared grocery list and the same front door at the end of every day."

For new neighbors

A short note under the door, or with a plant or a loaf of bread:

  • "Welcome to [street]. We're at number [12], the one with the [blue door]. Knock anytime if you need a ladder, a cup of sugar or the name of a good plumber."
  • "Welcome to the neighborhood. Trash day is [Tuesday], the [bakery on the corner] is worth the line, and we're glad you're here."
  • "Hello and welcome. We're [names] next door. Let us know once you're settled; we'd love to have you over for a drink."

When someone moves away or downsizes

For a move to a new city, or a smaller place after many years in one house:

  • "We'll miss having you around the corner, but this new place looks perfect for you. Send us the address and keep the guest room ready."
  • "Leaving the house you lived in for [30] years can't be easy. I hope the new place feels like home quickly, and that it's a lot less to clean."
  • "New city, new home, same us. Congratulations on the move. I'm already looking at flights."

Funny housewarming messages

  • "Congrats on your new home! May your Wi-Fi be strong and your neighbors be quiet."
  • "New house rule: shoes off, good vibes only, and always bring snacks when visiting."
  • "You officially have a place to hide from the world. Congratulations."
  • "Home is where the pants come off. Enjoy your new kingdom."
  • "Congrats! Now you get to experience the joy of adulting: property taxes, lawn care, and mysterious plumbing noises."
  • "Welcome to homeownership, where every weekend project takes three weekends."
  • "Congratulations on your new home, and on finding out exactly how expensive blinds can be."
  • "Enjoy that magical phase where every room says 'potential' and every receipt says 'ouch.'"
  • "Wishing you strong coffee, a working toolbox, and neighbors who don't borrow weird things."

Housewarming blessings

For a card from someone of faith, or to a family who would welcome one:

  • "May every room in your home hold hope, every table hold good company, and every heart inside it feel at peace."
  • "Blessings on your new home. May it shelter joy and strengthen the bonds of everyone who lives there."
  • "May God bless this house and everyone who walks through its door, and may it always be a place of rest."
  • "Peace to this house, and to all who live here and visit. Congratulations on your new home."

Short & sweet

  • "Welcome home. It already suits you."
  • "New home, new memories. Congrats!"
  • "Happy housewarming. Save me a seat."
  • "Home sweet home. Congratulations."
  • "Cheers to fresh starts and cozy spaces."
  • "Here's to your first night in the new place."

Housewarming card etiquette

When to send: Within 2 weeks of the housewarming party or move-in date.

Handwritten vs. digital: Handwritten is always better if you can. But a thoughtful digital message beats a generic card.

Include a gift? Not required, but appreciated. Popular choices: candle, wine, plant, kitchen tool, or a gift card to a home store.

What NOT to write: Avoid comments about the price ("Must have cost a fortune!"), the neighborhood ("Is it safe?"), or unsolicited renovation advice.

Pro tip: While you have their new address handy, Set a reminder for their birthday too. Greetigo emails you the day before, with a message ready.
