Forgot Their Birthday? Here's What to Say Now
If you forgot someone's birthday, tell them today: say happy birthday, say sorry in one sentence without a long excuse, and suggest a day to celebrate. It isn't too late. A day or a week late is ordinary, and a month late still lands if you say so plainly. Then save their birthday somewhere that reminds you before next year's.
Save their birthday and Greetigo emails you the day before next year's.
What to do now
- Reach out today: call if you can, or send a text or a voice note.
- Say it plainly: happy birthday, and sorry I missed it. One sentence of apology is enough.
- Skip the long excuse, and make the rest of the message about them.
- Suggest a specific time to celebrate, like coffee this week.
- Save the date, so next year is different. Greetigo emails you the day before, with a message ready to send or copy. Free for up to 10 saved dates.
It happens to people who care
Forgetting a birthday doesn't mean you don't care. Usually it means a busy week and a date that never made it into a reminder. Is it bad that you forgot? Much less than staying quiet would be. What matters now is what you do next, and that can be small, honest and today.
In the next hour
Call if you can; text if you can't. Keep it short:
- Sincere: "I'm sorry I missed your birthday. No excuse. I'm glad you were born, and I'd love to celebrate you this week."
- Light: "Happy belated birthday! I'm late, but the wishes are just as big."
- Very short: "Happy belated birthday. Thinking of you today."
Then ask how their day was, and listen. A card or a small gift can follow later in the week, as an extra, not instead of saying it today.
How late is too late?
There's no cutoff. What changes with time is how much you say about being late.
| How late | What to do |
|---|---|
| Later the same day | It isn't late yet. Skip the apology, and call or text before the day ends. |
| 1 to 3 days | Completely normal. One short sorry, then ask how they celebrated. |
| About a week | Still fine. Own it in a few words, and suggest a day to celebrate. |
| A month or more | Still worth sending. Say plainly that you missed it, then make the message about catching up. |
The messages below follow the same order. For the longer answer, with words for each, see how late is too late to say happy belated birthday.
If they had to remind you
It stings a little more when they noticed first, so don't explain the week you had. Agree, and say it: "You're right, and I'm sorry. Happy birthday. I lost track of the date, and I hate that I did."
Then ask about their day and listen. If they're laughing about it, laugh with them, and still follow up with a plan, so the reminder isn't the last word.
If you saw it on Instagram or in the group chat
A like on their post or an emoji in a busy thread is easy to miss. Send them a message of their own today, so it's clearly for them:
- "Just saw the photos from your birthday. Happy belated birthday! It looked like a great day, and I'm sorry I missed it."
- "Everyone in the chat beat me to it. Happy belated birthday, from me too. Drinks this week, on me?"
If it was last week
Say it anyway. A week late is ordinary, and naming it beats pretending you didn't notice: "I'm a week late, and I'm sorry. Happy birthday. I've been meaning to ask how you spent it."
Make the plan the bigger part of the message: a coffee, a call, a day you'll see them.
Messages by how late you are, and who it's for
"Happy belated birthday! I'm a day late and sorry I missed it. I hope it was a good one, and I'd love to hear how you celebrated."
"I'm a week late, and I'm sorry. Happy birthday! I've been thinking about you, and I'd love to catch up soon."
"I missed your birthday and I'm sorry it's taken me this long to say so. I hope the year has started well for you. Can we catch up soon?"
"Happy belated birthday to my favorite sibling (don't tell the others). I'm sorry I missed it. Dinner's on me this week."
"I'm sorry I missed your birthday. No good excuse, just a busy week and a bad memory. I'm really glad you were born, and I'd love to celebrate you this weekend if you're free."
"Happy belated birthday! I'm sorry I missed the day. I hope it was a good one, and that this year is even better."
"I missed your birthday and I'm sorry. You matter a lot to me. Can I take you out this week and celebrate properly?"
"So I missed your birthday. No excuse, just too many tabs open in my head. Happy belated birthday! Dinner's on me this week."
"Sorry these birthday wishes are late. I hope your day was a good one, and I'd love to hear how you celebrated."
If you forgot the present too
Words first, today. Don't hold the message back until you have something to give.
A present can follow later in the week, and small and specific beats big and rushed: their favorite coffee, the book they mentioned, tickets to something you'll do together. If it's on its way, say so: "Your present is late too. It arrives Saturday, and so do I." A gift that arrives with no message can feel like a payment.
What not to do
- The long excuse. It turns the message into an explanation about you.
- Apologizing until they have to comfort you. One honest sentence is enough.
- A gift instead of words. A present can be lovely, but not as a replacement for saying it.
Make it up with a plan, not a production
- Suggest a day to celebrate, and name it: coffee on Thursday, dinner on Saturday.
- Put one specific thing in your message: a memory, or something you admire about them.
- If you can, see them in person this week. Time together says more than a long apology.
What they may be feeling
Most people aren't keeping score of the date. What they want to know is that they matter to you. A warm, specific message, even a late one, answers that.

Who did you forget?
Some birthdays sting a little more, and each relationship has its own guide:
- Your wife, husband, girlfriend or boyfriend: what to say to your partner
- Your mom or dad: what to say to a parent
- Your mother-in-law or father-in-law: call or message them yourself, not only through your partner. The guide for parents works for them too.
- Your best friend: what to say to a best friend
- Your sister or brother: what to say to a sibling
- Your grandma or grandpa: what to say to a grandparent
- Your boss or a coworker: belated messages for work
