Forgot Your Best Friend's Birthday? Here's What to Say
A good friend minds the silence more than the date. Say it today, keep the apology short, and make a plan to celebrate. Here's what to say.
Save their birthday and Greetigo emails you the day before next year's.
Today: reach out first
If you've just realized, don't wait for the perfect message. A friend would rather hear from you now than get a polished note next week. Call, send a voice note, or text:
- "I missed your birthday and I'm sorry. Happy birthday. Drinks are on me this week."
- "Happy belated birthday! I lost track of the days, and I'm sorry. How was it? I want to hear everything."
- "No excuse, I just missed it. Happy birthday to one of my favorite people."
Then ask about their day, and listen.
If you missed the party or the group chat
Sometimes it isn't only the date. There was a dinner you didn't make, or a group chat full of wishes you scrolled past. Say that part plainly too: "I saw the photos from Saturday, and I'm sorry I wasn't there. Can I take you out, just the two of us?" A plan for the two of you shows you meant it.
Messages for your best friend
"Happy belated birthday! I'm a day late and I'm sorry. You'd never forget mine, so I owe you one. Coffee this week?"
"I missed your birthday last week, and I'm sorry. Happy birthday. You mean a lot to me, and I want to celebrate you properly. When are you free?"
"Happy belated birthday, friend. Sorry I'm late. Thinking of you, and dinner's on me."
"I'm sorry I missed your birthday. You've been there for me through so much, and I wasn't there on your day. I'm really glad you're my friend. Let me make it up to you."
"Happy birthday from the friend with the worst memory and the best intentions. Sorry I'm late. The next round is on me, and so is the one after."
"Happy belated birthday! I'm sorry I missed it, and sorry I'm so far away. Can we have a long call this weekend and catch up properly?"
"Happy belated birthday. I know it's been a while, and I'm sorry I missed your day. I've been thinking about you, and I'd love to catch up."
Make it up without making it awkward
Friends rarely want a grand gesture. They want to know they matter to you:
- Put a plan on the calendar (dinner, a walk, a game night) and name the day.
- Send something small that only you would know they'd like.
- Write a few lines about a favorite memory together.
Keep the apology to one sentence. If they end up reassuring you, the birthday becomes a conversation about you.
What they may be feeling
Most friends aren't counting dates. If they're a little hurt, it's usually the feeling of being an afterthought. A warm message today and a real plan answer that better than a long apology.

So next year is different
While it's fresh, save your friend's birthday somewhere that reminds you in time to act: your phone's calendar, a recurring reminder, or a reminder app. If a few close friends' birthdays matter to you, add them all at once; here's how to keep track of friends' birthdays.
Greetigo is one option. It emails you the day before (or on the days you choose) with a message already written. You review it, then send it or copy it into a text. It's free for up to 10 saved dates.
