Forgot Your Anniversary? Here's How to Make It Right
If you forgot your anniversary, say so today, in person if you can. Apologize plainly without excuses, tell them what the day means to you, and plan a time to celebrate together this week. Forgetting the date doesn't mean you love them less, and an honest apology with a real plan helps them feel it.
Save your anniversary and Greetigo emails you before next year's.
What to do now
- Tell them today, face to face if you can, rather than by text.
- Apologize once, plainly, without excuses.
- Say what the day means to you, with one specific memory of your time together.
- Plan a celebration this week, and put it in the calendar.
- Save the date, so next year is different. Greetigo emails you the day before, with a message ready to send or copy. Free for up to 10 saved dates.
Today: say it in person if you can
Tell them as soon as you realize, face to face or on a call, not in a note left on the counter. Keep it plain:
- "I forgot our anniversary. I'm sorry. You matter more to me than that, and I want to show it."
- "Happy anniversary. I got the date wrong and I'm sorry. Can I plan something for us this week?"
Then listen. If they're hurt, let them say so without defending yourself.
If it was yesterday
If you only realized the next morning, say it before they have to bring it up. Don't wait until you have the perfect plan; the apology comes first and the plan second:
- "I realized this morning that our anniversary was yesterday, and I let it go by. I'm sorry. Tonight is yours if you'll have it, and I'm planning the weekend too."
Then, the same day:
- 1.Clear your evening. Cancel what you can, so tonight is the two of you, even if it's dinner at home with phones away.
- 2.Put a day on the real celebration and say it out loud: "Saturday. I've booked it." A date in the calendar shows you mean it.
- 3.Write a few lines by hand about the year you've had together. It's the part people keep.
Words that don't make excuses
"I forgot our anniversary, and I'm sorry. There's no good excuse. You and our life together mean more to me than I showed today, and I'd like to make it up to you properly."
"I'm sorry I forgot our anniversary. I'd like to plan Saturday around you: the place we had our first date, phones away. Would you like that?"
"I forgot our anniversary. I'm sorry, and I won't make excuses. I love you, and I'm glad I get another year with you."
"Happy anniversary, love. I forgot the date, and I'm sorry. Marrying you is still the best thing I've done. Let me take you out this weekend."
"I'm sorry I forgot our anniversary. I'd like to make it up to you, so here's a plan: dinner Friday, my treat, phones away."
"Our anniversary was yesterday and I missed it. I'm sorry, and I'm not going to pretend I had something planned. I'd like to give you a proper evening this week, planned by me, start to finish."
"I forgot our first anniversary, and I know the first one matters. I'm sorry. A year ago I made you a lot of promises, and remembering our day should have been the easy one. Let me make this weekend about us."
"Two years since our first date, and I lost track of the day. I'm sorry. I'd still pick that night, that awful restaurant and you, every time. Can I take you somewhere better this week?"
"Happy six months. I lost track of the date yesterday, but not of how glad I am that we met."
Make it up without making it about money
A rushed, expensive gift can feel like a payment. Time and attention land better:
- Recreate your first date, or the one you both still talk about.
- Write a letter: what the last year with them meant to you, in your own words.
- Plan a day around what they enjoy, and put it in the calendar together.
Do it within the week, while the apology is fresh, and plan it yourself, start to finish: the booking, the time, who looks after the kids. Handing them a list of options to choose from puts the work back on them.
Writing a "sorry I forgot our anniversary" card
If you'd like to put it in a card, three lines inside are enough:
- 1.Own it: "I forgot our anniversary, and I'm sorry."
- 2.One true thing about your time together: a moment from this year, or something they do that you love.
- 3.The plan, with a day on it: "Saturday is ours. I've booked the place by the river."
Hand it over yourself rather than leaving it on the counter, and skip the joke card for now. A funny one can come later, once you've both laughed about it.
If it was your first anniversary
The first one often carries more weight: it's the first time you both see how you'll mark your days. Say that you know it mattered, not only that you're sorry, and give the day a proper second try this week. The traditional theme for a first anniversary is paper, so a handwritten letter fits, and it beats anything bought in a hurry. More words: first anniversary wishes.
If you're dating, not married
Couples who aren't married often count different days: the first date, the first kiss, the day you made it official. If you forgot yours, say so plainly and tell them what the day means to you. Then ask which date they count, so next year you're both marking the same one.
Monthly anniversaries: if your partner marks the months, a short, warm message is enough when you miss one. "Happy six months, I lost track of the date" lands better than a big apology. It's also fine to agree together on which dates you'll celebrate.
If it was your parents' anniversary
Call them today. A call is warmer than a text, and it can be short: say happy anniversary, say you're sorry you missed the day, ask how they celebrated, and listen. If it was a milestone, such as a 25th, 40th or 50th, suggest a lunch or a visit soon, and say when.
Happy belated anniversary to a couple you know
Missed a friend's or your parents' anniversary? Short and warm works:
- "Happy belated anniversary! Sorry I'm late. Here's to many more years together."
- "I missed your anniversary, but not the chance to say how much I admire you two. Happy anniversary!"
- "Happy belated anniversary, Mom and Dad. Thank you for showing me what a good marriage looks like."

So next year you hear about it in time
Save your anniversary with a reminder early enough to plan. A week or two before gives you time for a booking, a card or a day off. A shared calendar works, and so does a recurring reminder on your phone.
Greetigo is one option. It emails you the day before by default, or 7 or 14 days before if you want time to plan, with a message already written. You review it, then send it or copy it. Save the year you married or got together, and the email says which anniversary it is: "Your 4th anniversary with Sam is tomorrow." Your parents' anniversary can be its own date: mark yours Ours and theirs Someone else's, and each message is written for the right people, your partner or the couple. If a saved anniversary still slips past, your dashboard shows it for 3 days afterwards with a belated message ready. It's free for up to 10 saved dates.
