Belated Anniversary Wishes: What to Say When You're Late

If you missed someone's anniversary, send your wishes now. Say happy belated anniversary, say you're late in a few words without an excuse, and make the rest of the message about them: their years together or, for a work anniversary, what they've done. A warm message a few days late is still welcome.

Send it now, and keep the sorry short

Late wishes work when they do three things:

  1. 1.Say it plainly: happy belated anniversary, with their names.
  2. 2.Say you're late in a few words. "Sorry I missed the day" is enough. A long story about your week turns the message toward you.
  3. 3.Make the rest about them: how many years it's been, something you admire about them as a couple, or a plan to celebrate together.

For a couple you know, that's all it takes. Your own anniversary is different: it calls for a conversation more than a message, so see what to do when you forgot your anniversary.

Who do you never want to forget?

Whose anniversary?

The ready message is written for your partner.

Date
  • The day before by default. You can pick the day itself, or 3, 7 or 14 days before.
  • No ads, and we never sell your data.

How late is too late?

For a couple you know or a coworker, there's no hard cutoff, but the message changes with time:

  • A day or two: "happy belated anniversary" and one line of sorry. It reads as an ordinary late wish.
  • Within a week or two: still normal. Mention the date so it doesn't look like a mix-up: "I know your anniversary was last Saturday."
  • A month or more: skip the apology and make it a reason to get in touch: "I was thinking about your anniversary last month and realized I never said anything. Thirty years. Can I take you both to lunch?"
  • Your own: the same day you realize, in person.

Belated anniversary wishes, by who they're for

A couple you know, a day late

"Happy belated anniversary to you both. Sorry I missed the day. The way you two still make each other laugh is one of my favorite things about our group of friends."

Friends, a week late

"I know your anniversary was last weekend and I'm only saying it now: happy anniversary. Eight years of you two hosting the best dinners we go to. Next round is on us."

Your sister and her husband

"Happy belated anniversary, you two. Sorry this is late. Watching you build your life together has been one of the best parts of the last few years. Love you both."

Inside a card for a couple

"Happy belated anniversary. These wishes are late, but they're sincere: here's to many more years of you two being exactly who you are together."

A quick text to a couple

"Happy belated anniversary! Hope you got a good evening out of it."

Your parents, the next day

"Happy belated anniversary, Mom and Dad. I'm sorry I missed yesterday. Thirty-two years, and you still save each other the window seat. I'll call tonight to hear how you celebrated."

Your parents, a milestone year

"I missed your fortieth, and it deserves better than a late text. Happy anniversary, both of you. Can I take you to dinner this month? Pick the night, and it's my treat."

Your in-laws

"Happy belated anniversary to you both. Sorry we're late with this. Thank you for welcoming me into the family, and for showing us that a long marriage can still be fun."

Your grandparents

"Happy belated anniversary, Grandma and Grandpa. Fifty-one years is a lot to celebrate, and I'm sorry I missed the day. I'm coming by on Sunday with cake."

Your partner, a day late

"I let our anniversary slip by yesterday, and I'm sorry. You're still the best decision I've made. Friday night is planned, by me, every part of it."

Your partner, a short note

"Happy belated anniversary, love. I was late with the date, not with how I feel about you."

Your partner, after a reminder

"Thank you for being kinder about this than I deserve. Happy anniversary. I'd like to celebrate us properly on Saturday, if you'll let me plan it."

Work: manager to employee

"Happy belated work anniversary, [name]. [Four] years as of last week, and I should have said so on the day. Thank you for [taking on the new client accounts]. It made a real difference to the team."

Work: to a peer

"I missed your work anniversary, so here it is late: happy [three] years. You're still the person I ask when something breaks, and you still answer kindly."

Work: in the team channel

"A few days late, but worth saying in here: [name] just passed [ten] years with us. Thank you for [one specific thing], and congratulations."

Work: to your boss

"Happy belated work anniversary. I noticed the date had passed and didn't want to let it go by: thank you for backing the team this year."

Work: short and late

"Belated congratulations on [five] years. Sorry I missed the day. Glad you're here."

What to write in a late anniversary card

A card can arrive after the day and still be welcome. Three lines inside are enough:

  1. 1.Happy belated anniversary, with both names.
  2. 2.One sentence about being late, without the reason.
  3. 3.One line about them: the number of years, a memory from their wedding, or what you admire about them as a pair.

If you're posting it, send it this week and allow a few days for delivery; the timing works as it does for mailing a birthday card. If you'll see them soon, hand it over yourself.

Belated work anniversaries

At work, a late message is normal, and the rule is the same as on the day: name something specific they did. "Thanks for all you do" could go to anyone; "thank you for rebuilding the onboarding this spring" can only go to them.

  • Say which anniversary it is. A first and a tenth are different moments.
  • From a manager, say it privately first if it was a milestone you missed, then mark it with the team if your team usually does.
  • Skip the public apology. One short line about being late is enough.

More for the day itself: work anniversary messages. Keeping track of a team: work anniversary reminders.

When your own anniversary is the one you missed

A late message to your partner works best after you've talked, not instead of it. Say it in person or on a call, then let the message or the card follow with the plan in it. The lines above for a partner are short on purpose; for what to say and how to make it up, see forgot your anniversary and, for a husband who forgot, what to say to your wife.

Frequently asked questions

How late is too late to say happy anniversary?
For a couple you know or a coworker, a week or two late is still normal; mention the date so it doesn't look like a mix-up. After a month, skip the apology and use it as a reason to get in touch, for example by suggesting lunch. For your own anniversary, say it the day you realize.
Is it OK to send belated anniversary wishes by text?
Yes, for friends, a couple you know or a coworker. For your parents in a milestone year, or for grandparents, a call or a card means more. For your own anniversary, talk first, in person or on a call, and let a text follow.
Is it happy belated anniversary or belated happy anniversary?
Both are understood. Happy belated anniversary is the more common phrase. Strictly, it's the wishes that are late, so belated happy anniversary is the tidier order. Use whichever sounds like you.
Should I explain why I'm late?
Usually not. One short line, such as sorry I missed the day, is enough. A reason can sound like an excuse and turns the message toward you. If something serious kept you away, a few words about it are fine.

So next year you're on time

Keep the anniversaries you care about in one place that reminds you ahead of time: a shared calendar, a recurring reminder on your phone, or a reminder app.

Greetigo is one option. Save an anniversary once and it emails you before the date every year: the day before by default, or on the day, or 1, 3, 7 or 14 days before. Each email comes with a message ready, which you review, then send or copy. Mark an anniversary Someone else's and the message is written to the couple; mark it Ours and it's written to your partner. Save the year it began and the email says which anniversary it is, such as their 30th. Work anniversaries can be saved too. If a saved date slips past anyway, your dashboard shows it for 3 days afterwards with a belated message ready. It's free for up to 10 saved dates, and only you get the email.
