Thanksgiving Messages, by Who You're Writing To
A Thanksgiving message works best when it names something real: the dish someone always makes, the year they drove four hours in the snow, the seat they save for you. Find the person you're writing to below, copy a message, and change one detail so it sounds like you.
Thanksgiving 2026 in the US is on Thursday, November 26, 2026. The next Canadian Thanksgiving is on Monday, October 11, 2027.
42 messages: card messages, family, the host, your partner, friends, coworkers and clients, someone far away, someone grieving, and short texts.
When is Thanksgiving?
In the United States, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, a federal holiday set by law. In Canada, Thanksgiving Day is the second Monday of October, about six weeks earlier. Many families in both countries get together over the weekend around it, so a message a day or two early is never wrong.

What to write in a Thanksgiving card
A good Thanksgiving card has three parts:
- 1.Who you're thankful for, by name. "Dear Aunt Rose" reads warmer than "Dear all", unless the card really is for everyone.
- 2.One specific thing. A dish, a habit, a moment from this year. "Thank you for driving Mom to every appointment in March" says more than "thank you for everything".
- 3.A short wish or plan. "See you at Christmas" or "I'll call on Sunday" gives the card an ending that isn't a cliché.
Sign it the way you'd sign any card to that person: "Love" for family, "With thanks" or "Warmly" for someone you know less well. If you're bringing the card to dinner, give it to the host before you sit down; after the meal they'll be busy.
A card for the whole family
To all of you: I don't say it often enough, but this table is my favorite place all year. Thank you for the saved seat, the yearly argument about pie, and for always making room for whoever shows up. I'm grateful for every one of you.
A card for a friend's family
Thank you for including me in your Thanksgiving again this year. You've never once made me feel like a guest, and that means more than I can fit in a card. I'm thankful for all of you.
A card for neighbors
Happy Thanksgiving to the best neighbors on the street. Thank you for the shoveled path last winter, the zucchini all August, and the wave every morning. We're lucky to live next door to you.
For your family
Family messages can be the hardest to write, because so much goes unsaid the rest of the year. Thanksgiving is a good excuse to say one of those things. Pick one memory, or one thing the person does that you've never thanked them for, and put it in.
For your parents
Mom and Dad, thank you for every Thanksgiving you pulled off while working full time, and for never letting us see how tired you were. I see it now. I'm thankful for you both, today and every day.
For your grandparents
Grandma and Grandpa, so many of my favorite memories happened at your table. Thank you for the recipes, the stories and the patience. Happy Thanksgiving. I'll call you after dinner.
For a brother
Happy Thanksgiving to the only other person who remembers the year the oven died at noon. I'm thankful you're my brother, even when you take the last roll.
For your kids
I'm thankful for you every single day, and today I get to say it out loud. You make our family louder, funnier and kinder. Happy Thanksgiving.
For your in-laws
Thank you for welcoming me into your family and to your table. I've learned a lot from you, including how seriously this family takes its stuffing. I'm grateful to be part of it.
For the host
Hosting Thanksgiving is days of work. Offer to bring something before, thank them the same evening, and if they did something special, mail a handwritten note in the week after; people keep those. Name a dish or a moment rather than saying everything was great. For more ways to say it, see thank-you messages for every occasion.
Before you arrive
Thank you for having us this year. What can I bring? I'm happy to take a side dish, the drinks, or the dishes after, which I suspect is the job nobody wants.
A text the same evening
Thank you for tonight. Everything was delicious, but the best part was the long talk at the end when nobody wanted to get up. We're so grateful you opened your home.
A thank-you note to mail
Thank you for a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know how much work goes into a day like that, from the shopping to the last plate put away, and you made it look easy. We felt completely at home. Thank you for having us.
A first-time host
Your first Thanksgiving as the host, and you pulled it off. The turkey was perfect, and nobody could tell how nervous you were. Thank you for taking it on.
Parents who still host
Thank you for hosting again, even though you said last year would be the last time. We all knew it wouldn't be, and we're glad. Thank you for keeping us together.
For your partner
To a partner, short and specific beats a long declaration. Thank them for something from this year that only you saw. If you're spending the day apart, or with one side of the family, say that you miss them without making them feel guilty for it.
A note on the counter
I'm thankful for you every day, but especially today, when you've been up since six and still laughed at my jokes. Happy Thanksgiving. The dishes are mine.
Your first Thanksgiving together
Our first Thanksgiving together. I'm thankful for this year with you and for all the ordinary days that made it. I can't wait to start traditions of our own.
After a hard year
This year asked a lot of us, and we got through it together. Of everything I'm thankful for, you're at the top of the list. Happy Thanksgiving, love.
Spending the day apart
I wish I were at your family's table instead of my own today. Save me a slice of your aunt's pecan pie, and call me when the dishes are done. Thankful for you.
For friends
Friendsgiving, a friend far from their own family, an old friend you keep meaning to call: a text on the day is plenty. If a friend hosted, thank them the way you'd thank any host. If a friend is working the holiday, a message and a saved plate mean a lot.
For a close friend
Happy Thanksgiving to the friend who knows my whole story and stays anyway. I'm thankful for you this year and every year.
For the Friendsgiving host
Thank you for organizing Friendsgiving again. You turned a group chat into a full table, and somehow nobody brought the same dish. It was the best night of my month.
A friend you don't see often
We don't talk as much as we used to, but I thought of you today and wanted you to know I'm thankful for our friendship. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
A friend who helped you this year
I'm thankful for a lot this year, and you're near the top. You showed up when I needed it and never once made me feel like a burden. Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you.
A friend working the holiday
Thinking of you working today. Thank you for taking the shift so other people can be home. There's a plate in my fridge with your name on it.
For coworkers and clients
Keep work messages warm and short, and send them on Tuesday or Wednesday, while people still read email. Not every coworker celebrates Thanksgiving, especially on teams in more than one country, so a message about the long weekend or the year's work fits everyone. For clients, thank them for the year without turning the note into a sales pitch.
For your team
Happy Thanksgiving to the team. I'm grateful for the way everyone pitched in this year, especially during the busy weeks. Enjoy the long weekend, and please don't check email.
For your manager
Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for your support this year and for the flexibility when I needed it. I hope you get a real break this weekend.
For a coworker
Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks for being the person I can always ask a quick question, and for never making it feel like a silly one. Enjoy the time off.
For a client
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us. Thank you for your trust and your business this year. We're grateful to work with you and wish you a restful holiday.
A team in more than one country
To everyone celebrating Thanksgiving this week, enjoy the time with your people. And to everyone else on the team, thank you for keeping things running while half of us are offline.
For someone far away
For family in another city or another country, a message matters more than usual, because they're missing the table. Tell them what they're missing, set a time to call, and if you can, send something they can open or eat on the day.
Family in another time zone
Happy Thanksgiving from here. It's strange to sit down without you. Call when you start eating and we'll pass the phone around the table.
A student who can't come home
We'll miss you at the table this year. Your chair is staying where it is, and there are leftovers in the freezer with your name on them for December. Call us after dinner. We love you.
Someone serving overseas
Thinking of you this Thanksgiving and thankful for you. We'll raise a glass at dinner and tell the story about the year you burned the rolls. Come home safe.
A friend who moved away
Your house on the corner has new people in it, and Thanksgiving doesn't feel right without your cornbread. Missing you today. Happy Thanksgiving in your new city.
For someone who is grieving
The first Thanksgiving after a death, a divorce or a hard diagnosis can be very lonely, especially at a table where the empty chair is obvious. Name the person if you knew them, don't ask anyone to be cheerful, and make any invitation easy to turn down. The days after the holiday can be harder than the day itself, so a second message that weekend helps.

The first Thanksgiving without someone
I know this first Thanksgiving without your dad will be hard. I'm thinking of you today, and of him at the head of the table. No need to reply. I'm here.
An invitation with no pressure
If you'd like company on Thursday, there's a seat at our table, and you can leave whenever you want. If you'd rather keep the day quiet this year, that's okay too. Thinking of you.
A hard year for them
I know this hasn't been an easy year, and holidays can make that heavier. I'm thankful for you, and I hope today has at least one quiet, good moment in it.
The weekend after
Thinking of you this weekend. The days after a holiday can be harder, once everyone has gone home. I'm around if you want to talk, take a walk, or just not be alone.
Short texts for Thanksgiving Day
For the group chat, a quick text before dinner, or someone you want to reach without making it a big moment. Each one is short enough to send as it is.
The simplest one
Happy Thanksgiving. Thankful for you.
For the family group chat
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Grateful for this loud, lovely family.
Before dinner
Happy Thanksgiving. Thinking of you as we sit down to eat.
For an old friend
Happy Thanksgiving. You're one of the people I'm thankful for this year.
For Canadian Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving to you in Canada. Enjoy the long weekend and the pie.
A day late
A belated Happy Thanksgiving. I thought of you on Thursday and should have said so then.
From the host to the guests
Thank you all for coming. The house is quiet now, and we already miss the noise.
